MUCC w/ the Guns Blog Translations
I'm sure most people are angered reading about what happened to MUCC opening for Guns n' Roses, but no one's been showing any proof to backup the story. I googled around for a bit tonight and found a few blogs talking about the shows, and although it seems that MUCC did get booed, I haven't found anything that talks about their equipment being messed with or Tatsurou bowing low to the crowd. FYI - The Guns came on late because of the typhoon that hit Japan recently.

Of course the audience's rude behavior was awful, but it seems that of the people blogging about the shows, even if they didn't like the music, they felt sorry for MUCC. But I haven't had much luck with finding much information on the shows. Of course, it could be the case that since they're Guns fans, they don't want to talk about the opening act or it was bad, so they don't want to say anything. Personally, I think it (unfortunately) only takes a few people to ruin a show - they get others to join in with them and the rest who object to it are too shy/passive aggressive to do anything about it and just let it happen, while the band has to stand up there and take it. My sympathies for MUCC and personally, they don't need asshats like them as fans.

EDITED 7/30 - Sorry it took me a while! Added a few more live reports and comments from MUCC when it was first announced they would open for the Guns. Also put the reports in chronological order.

I found this little tid bit amusing:

7/14/07 – Chiba Makuhari Messe
Richard and Robin perform Endless Rain by Japanese band X Japan as part of their guitar duet.

On to the translations/summaries:

7/14 Makuhari Messe - http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/ruriiro310/13242668.html

First off was the opening act. They seem like a Japanese visual kei band, but who are they?? Right there, I looked them up on my cell phone. I’ve heard their name before and they’re a visual kei band that has sold quite well, but they weren’t able to capture the hearts of the audience. The amount of people acknowledging them seemed low, and they were mismatched (with the music of the Guns). Although they were the opener, they weren’t able to get the hall warmed up (of course this wasn’t the fault of the band).

7/14 & 7/15 Makuhari Messe -  http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/mknxy597/48281943.html

The opener was MUCC! Now that I think of it, I felt bad for them… At first when I heard about the opening act, I heard they’re a visual kei band and thought that’s the worst (saiaku)!, but seeing them for the 2nd day in a row, they are very modest guys! During the MC, the singer said, “I thought my duty here was to get this hall warmed up.” You certainly got us warmed up! But to be blunt, during the 1st and 2nd day, there was a bad mannered guy and it was unpleasant to see him! The first day MUCC performed, people threw things at them, stuck up their middle finger and were taken out by security… The 2nd day, the guy jeering them was there again.. “Go back! You guys suck (Hikkome, hetakuso)!” and the like… Security kept their eye on that guy.. Certainly they were mis-matched to play with the Guns, and the majority of people weren’t interested in their music. Well, to be honest… During their performance, I forgave them.. But honestly, their music didn’t interest me. To be frank, it’d be better if those guys didn’t come near (again)! On the 2nd day, their performance was over in about 30 minutes and then they came out to perform again! At this time, the vocalist said, “We’re going to perform a little more now. We’re just background music, so please listen!” They really are modest guys. They played for an hour, but most likely, Axl hadn’t arrived at the hall yet and the organizers stupidly told them to play (again)!? I hate those guys too (the organizers)… Even in the hall, here and there were people saying, “I feel sorry for them (kawaisou)”…. Well, I didn’t want them to be discourage with this and for them to persist on! Maybe this was a good (learning) experience for them?

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/xx_baccara_xx/50217112.html

MUCC starts playing at 4PM. They weren’t able to get the crowd warmed up. Whether their music is like the Guns or not, people jeered at them and shouted, “Go back home!” I felt bad for them. Doing some MC is admirable, but people continued, “Shut up! If you’ve got a problem with it, come up here!” and used other abusive language. Their set was over in 40 minutes. MUCC came back on stage once again. Around 6:30PM (30-40 min behind schedule), it was announced, “Axl has just left his hotel.” The show started 1.5 hours later.

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/shinyan1007/49746162.html

At 5PM, the opening band started playing. They’re a Japanese band called MUCC. I heard of them from music sites, but am not familiar with them. Sorry to MUCC and MUCC fans, but honestly, I don’t like them. The opener didn’t warm us up at all. There were also some people booing them in the audience. Well, everyone came to see the Guns, so it can’t be helped… The opener ended at 5:35PM (long!).

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/kzkz_86/13183123.html

At 4PM, the curtain went up and the opening band, MUCC’s performance started. Honestly, in terms of music and the atmosphere, it was cruel (hidoi).. But people didn’t have to jeer at them.. The people who came to see the Guns said things like, “Go home,” “You suck!,” etc… The feeling that they should go back home. After that, they strangely went on stage again and played for about an hour..

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://blog.livedoor.jp/gtk7/archives/51037571.html

The day of the live…. A typhoon hit!!! Typically people won’t go anymore!!!

On the official website:
7/15 To everyone attending the Guns n’ Roses live at the Makuhari Messe Hall
Due to the level 4 typhoon, the JR Keiyou trains will be running every 20-30 minutes (50% are running). We are giving more time (for everyone to attend), so please come.

The live was held after all.

But the Keiyou line was delayed and it took me more than 2 hours to get to the hall.

Incidentally, today the door opened at 2PM and the curtain went up at 4PM with the opening act MUCC.

To be honest, why MUCC? It’s not that I think MUCC’s music is bad, but it seems that the fans on the floor felt different… How do I say it…

MUCC finished playing after 4:30PM.

The Guns are coming!!!! I thought……
But MUCC came out once again!!!
“Please familiarize yourself with our music a little longer (mou sukoshi otsukiai kudasai)”…. It seemed painful…

And so the opening act played again….
There was a feeling of detest …..

I’m sorry to say there was this kind of feeling. The Guns came on stage at…. 7PM.

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://wasavy.way-nifty.com/blog/2007/07/guns_n_roses_wo_1.html

MUCC started the show. I heard that people were sitting on the floor, but whatever songs they did, the drums loud, it was tiresome to continue listening to them. The vocalist’s performance was dull and wasn't that enjoyable to watch. Although I got this impression of them, there was no reason to jeer at them. They modestly did their best.

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://fantomas.kill.jp/blog/archives/2007/07/guns_n_roses_at.html

As soon as the curtain went up at 4PM, MUCC began in a very relaxed environment.

MUCC
Although they seem to be a visual kei band, their music really felt like it was influenced by heavy rock from long ago. Well, the vocalist had the image of a visual kei artist.

Lyrics like, “The first time we parted, I knew nothing could replace you” and “Where are you, where did you go to?” gave me such goosebumps! And pierced my heart. They had a lot of similarities with lyrics from western music, but no mistaking it, it was in Japanese. It drove straight up my anus. Of course they had other lyrics that hit me quickly, but during the second song, I sat down. I saw them a bit from the side. Their music felt so good. Incidentally, after the second song was over, I wondered where everyone around me went.

However, in my good mood, things changed when water (bottles) were thrown on stage. “Get back to the studio and practice!” “Go back home!!” Yes, insults like this. The jeering took off. For some reason, everyone started getting noisy. MUCC continued to play their songs, maybe considering not having any silence between their songs, but without fail, when there was silence, the jeering continued. “Hey drummer in the red shirt, quit playing! You have anything to say?!,” “Why aren’t you fighting back?!,” (Things were getting worse, so they tried to MC) “Go home!” and other insults were shouted at the members with such frank hate, as their faces began to get worried. It was getting chilly, like freezing rain! With such insults flying around, security shuffled together.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard jeering like this, which was during BUMP N’ GRIND’s live while opening for PRETTY MAIDS. But that time, Ken Ayugai handled it well.

With this, everyone in MUCC continued to play, most likely in pain, and when they finished, there were harsh cheers of, “It’s finally over~.” But they went on quite long, playing for more than 50 minutes.

But why is it when MUCC got off stage, the audience’s energy disappeared? Huh? When this sort of feeling started drifting in the air, MUCC returned in the midst of the screams. Without strength, the vocalist muttered, “Instead of listening to the background music, please let us play a little longer…” to start off their performance again. Huh? I felt so sorry for them. In total, they played for about 70 minutes.

Finally after MUCC was done being publicly punished again, it was once again peaceful in the hall. And then there was an announcement from the sponsor.

7/15 Makuhari Messe - http://ichirou.tea-nifty.com/blog/2007/07/guns_n_roses_517c.html

I felt quite sorry for the opening act, MUCC. The way things went for Siam Shade (see below) before, I felt it’s better if they didn’t play, but they did. The back of the B block was set aside for MUCC’s fanclub to help support them. However, the first row (it’s strange that they were standing) were all standing (blocking their view??). They kept playing songs no one was familiar with at all…. At first, the vocalist was full of confidence, but by the end, that mood was spoiled and cast away (the 2nd day had people strongly jeering again, being an opening act that’s younger than the audience, who haven’t heard them before).

Before long, this performance sponsored by Creativeman became a huge mess.

If it was me, I wouldn’t have tried to perform.

7/5 Visual Kei Band to Open for the Guns
Today, the opening act for Guns N’ Roses has been decided. I don’t know who they are at all. Looking them up, they seem to be a visual kei band. Will they be alright? When Siam Shade opened for Motley Crue, It was a tragedy.

As soon as they started playing, people got up and went outside and wandered freely around the hall in the middle of the performance. Not knowing who the opening act was, people sharply looked down at Siam Shade with doubt, like shooting birds to eat. And the people in the first row put on their headphones, bobbing their heads while listening to Motley Crue CDs as soon as Siam Shade started (I was sitting in the 4th row, so I saw it all and it’s true that people were walking around…. Sorry).

It was an all standing live, so I thought people couldn’t wander around, but there really was a feeling of hate present.

From the start, heavy metal/hard rock fans and visual kei songs don’t go together and shouldn’t be booked together. If this band isn’t able to get the hall warmed up, Axl might get mad and leave. Who was the one in charge of the booking?

It’d be better to get a nameless rock band as the opener instead…

7/17 Nippon Gaishi Hall - http://wasavy.way-nifty.com/blog/2007/07/guns_n_roses_wo_2.html

As usual, when I got to the hall, MUCC was playing on stage, but today they finished in no more than 20 minutes. It’s unreasonable for an opener to make such a setting, but it’s good, maybe?

7/17 Nagoya Nippon Gaishi Hall - http://blog.livedoor.jp/tamiki_chan/archives/64607498.html

The opening act MUCC was.. They had the feeling of, “Hmmm.” Some parts really helped get the crowd warmed up, but most people sat down (myself included) with a quiet appreciation (?) for the band. But.. Playing in front of an audience, where most of us aren’t their fans, it was probably painful for them. This was their opportunity to show all of us their band, and so after every song, I applauded for them.

7/18 Nippon Budokan - http://amones2.blog106.fc2.com/blog-entry-35.html
(From the view of a MUCC fan)

MUCC’s Setlist:
SE: Rave Circus
1. Gokusai
2. Shadan
3. Kanashii Hanashi
4. Media no Juusei
5. Monster
6. Ranchuu

They sounded horrible. I wanted to cry. If I thought, “Such a shabby sound at the Budokan?” about them, then the Guns had really good sound, so it was just MUCC who’s sound was awful. Well, they were the opening act, so I can’t say much, but… but this was awful. At first, the low tones (mainly the bass and drums) seemed confined and I couldn’t hear them well. The guitar sounded light and airy. Usually, their lives are louder and have more depth to them, but this is all they had to show? I thought, “Why can’t I hear the guitar intro of Ranchuu very well?” Do their amps need to be fixed? Aren’t the speakers connected? So I felt bad for all those who only came to see MUCC and also for MUCC. Put some more sound into it! Well, it can’t be helped if Guns fans think MUCC sounds shabby and it seems like they did. It was mortifying. Although they sounded bad, MUCC still did their best. All the members wore t-shirts of the Guns. In the middle of Media, no Juusei, Tatsurou shouted “Ahhhhhhhhh” without using the mic and all the Guns fans went, “Ohh!” (they were amazed). After every song, Tatsurou bowed to us. The audience applauded. Today, there were a lot of MUCC fans present, with people calling out to the members here and there. There wasn’t anyone jeering at all. The arena was about 1/3 full, which is weak. Everyone in the arena sat down until MUCC started playing, and then there were a lot standing up when they started. I had a fan club ticket and was thankful that the E block had 2 beams. I was at the front of the E block and I could see really well! There were other cute MUCC fans around me, so I thought of trying to talk with them, but they seemed quite shy and I ended up not talking to them. The rail was too high (came up higher than my chest) and I wasn’t able to headbang. I thought, “can’t you play a little longer?” but they finished in exactly 30 minutes. Feeling incredibly incomplete, MUCC finished their set.

7/21 Osaka Intex - http://d.hatena.ne.jp/cujo/20070721

Oddly, the opening band of choice was pitiful and really out of place. They were a Japanese visual kei band called MUCC. But everyone warmly applauded for them and smiled. It was probably just the MUCC fans (girls).

7/21 Osaka Intex - http://scrapbook.ameba.jp/gunsnroses_book/entry-10040679044.html

At first, I couldn’t remember who they were, but during the MC, they said they were a band called MUCC. If my memory is correct, they’re a visual kei band.

Although they came out wearing Guns t-shirts, I couldn’t see if they were wearing makeup since their faces were so distant. Ha ha, that’s the way to sell visual kei. Typically for visual kei bands, they stop doing the makeup to make themselves sell better. Well, the Guns wore glam makeup before, so it’s nothing bad.

They were the opening act for all of the Guns’ performances, today being their last day. They played at all the performances, but it felt like this was their first time playing, as their MC was unusually ordinary. Well, listening to them, they were painfully dim, but maybe they could have said something like, “Today’s our last day!”

They had a fairly heavy sound. The intro and A melody was like Slipknot or Korn, and the climax of their songs were in a minor key, like enka. In short, their music is based on enka music. It’s a new style of music that Japanese bands haven’t done before. You can do it! MUCC!!

Soon afterwards, they finished playing. And then the 2% girls left the floor.

Comments from the members after announcing to open for Guns n’ Roses - http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/3231748/

Tatsurou – When we were asked to be the opening act, we were given the OK after they checked to see who we are and what our sound is like, but just this alone, isn’t it amazing. And as usual, without over exerting ourselves or withering away, we’ll do things the way we’ve always done them. Honestly, there’s a huge gap between our age differences (laugh), so conversely, won’t we have the spirit to relax and face things?

Satochi – When I was in junior high, it was a time when I’d listen to nothing but western music and I listened to Guns n’ Roses a lot in those days. The day has come when we’ll stand on the stage together and it’s not just my imagination. It’s amazing. As usual, I’ll boast about it to my friends.

YUKKE – It’s going to be a really hot live, huh. But keeping calm and without over exerting ourselves, MUCC will go out and perform on stage just like we always do.

Miya – My impression of a band like Guns n’ Roses is that even people in their 50s listen to them and it’s rather universal for people to comment, “Ah, they’re good, huh.” With this, speaking of rock standards, they’re a band that doesn’t have a border between hard rock and heavy metal, and is perceived as, “What rock is.” Being chosen to play with such people, we’ll play for fans who agree with these things and rather than being joined at a “place” together, we’ll perform live our way.

Thanks a lot for your investigation and sharing this information (plus translate it? o_o)

I still feel sad for Mucc because, they are so great, and always do their work with heart. I don't understand why fan are so rude. I know it was just the opening act (and i know that during concert, opening act are always difficult) and that they only wait for Gun'N'Roses but it's really disrespectful and stupid. They are free to dislike Mucc's music but it was maybe really too crual.
And it's a relief to see that not all G'N'R are so close-minded x_x.

then, thanks again =)

Yes, thank you.
That's a bit heartwarming that there are people who, even if they didn't like the music, still respected the musicians.

Thank you very much for posting this. I've been searching, too, but coudn't find as much as you did.
Well, now the hapening becomes a bit clearer to me now.
I would really like to hear some statement by Mucc themself. What are they thinking about us after seeing their fan's reaction? ^_^ (happy? proud? confused?)
yuliatangerinelite on July 24th, 2007 03:07 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the sources. I really hope the part about Tatsurou bowing and stuff isn't true..

I find this to be unbelievable. No band deserves this crap. MUCC fans were pretty polite to Nana Kitade, a pretty big bad clash, so I can't even begin to imagine why the fans couldn't just suck it up. Hey, problems happen and they don't need to make it worse. Wow.
jana ♥alagthondiel on July 24th, 2007 04:43 pm (UTC)
thanks for those translation works, they made things clearer for me, too. so for most guns' fans it was just mismatched - and they still found those rude people unbearable...i'm kinda glad to hear that, but too bad they didn't oppose. mh, maybe that's just 'japanese' again, but i would have told them (the audience) to shut up even if i didn't like the music too much.

Richard and Robin perform Endless Rain by Japanese band X Japan as part of their guitar duet.

LOL XDD the audience didn't bother that X were .....rather VK related, too?? i mean, it must have sounded great, but if some were so angered by MUCC playing beforehand... '_'

& have fun tonight, lucky you got tickets for ellegarden's show!!

Well, the difference is that X was huge and MUCC is not. Plus X was always viewed as a metal band.

Thanks for your time. I was googling yesterday to if I found some official site that talk about it but I didn't find anything. It's sad this, but I know MUCC will learn of it and will be stronger.

thanks for translating and sharing this information. it's hard times for any opening act T-T .
inola_chan on July 25th, 2007 08:02 am (UTC)
it's hard...
yeah, it is. The most of the fans are coming to a concert to see the main band and not the opening act, so it's always dificult to satisfy the audience.
But the guns' fans behavior is just sad.

Thanks for the translations. I heard about this a while ago, but (luckily) forgot all about it until today when I stumbled upon some mention on it and decided to investigate a little more. I can't understand how people can be som inconsiderant?!! You dont have to like the opening act but it's common courtesy not to throw things at them and jeer at them. The guys of MUCC are really sweet and so proud of their music and they don't deserve to be treated that way ;__; I hope the Guns fans who did this shit at least realized they're being assholes and felt ashamed later...

i read a couple of reviews on gnr sites (www.heretodaygonetohell.com, www.gunsnrosesonline.de). mucc were mentioned only a couple of times. i remember that someone called them a "decent" band. another one said that the fans in chiba "rocked" a little bit when mucc were on and when gnr came the place erupted. so on gnr sites i didn't read anything about them getting disrespected by the fans. so i am not sure if it was really that bad.
in general i think it is hard for an "ex-visual" band to play in front of "normal" hard rock fans in japan.
xxshixx on July 25th, 2007 05:10 pm (UTC)
It's really sad to read such things
Mucc is such a great band, they are working so damn hard and they put their heart and soul into their music but that's not the point.
Of course they were 'only' the opening act but does this entitles the guns'fans to act in such a way?I think not
It's so inhuman, that pisses me off
Nobody demands that they HAD to like and hear Mucc but shouldn't we demonstrate respect even for them, we don't like?
Such a behaviour makes me sad, really sad.. ,_,

So I'm extremly dissapointed about the people's behavior. I'd like to know how MUCC feels about it... (sorry if my sentence doesn't make sense... :S) It's propably a big kick in their bottoms, as their popularity was growing up and up...

In fact, I' crying right now... I feel so sorry for Tasturou, Miya, Yukke an Satochi. I saw them several times live and they are neither "ordinary" nor "dull"

And that "heavy metal/hard rock fans and visual kei songs don’t go together and shouldn’t be booked together." is SO untrue. Me myself (and my brothers, my best friends and many people from my fav. club which plays J-Rock since 2 years) like western metal and J-Rock and I love both things.
Not to forget the very positive reviews many J-Rock Bands got from (german) music magazines (even metal and gothic magazines) for their CDs and performances. And Mucc, Dir en grey, D'espairs Ray and Kagerou even participated at the famous Wacken Open Air or Rock am Ring and some different smaller festivals and got quite good appreciation even from the non- fangirls!!

I only want to comfort Mucc by giving even more than I give anyway on their next live I'd be able to see.

----
I'd never even hoot down the opneing band, thats absolutely not fair! (But I think it's okay to say something to the main act if he play crap; I mean that's the band I payed for)

wow just now i stumbled over the information how mucc were treatened at the GNR for the first time and directly looked up here at itai_tegami.

first: thank you so much for all this information... it must have been hard to find all this entries and everything.

gosh i feel so bad for them... it may really be a mismatch to put a VK-band together with GNR (but who would be good as OA for such a ... "special" band as GNR? i have no idea...) but i can't understand how ppl can be so cruel. no matter if the music suits your taste or not you have to at least give them a chance to perform peacefully, right? i can't understand pple insulting mucc, who're trying to give their best (as well as any other band). i was at concerts where openingacts weren't to my likening but then well i jsut kept quiet and let them finish... it's cruel what happened to mucc and i feel so damn sorry for them TT__TT i really felt like crying while reading some of those articles... i idolize this band and i can't understand why other pple have to bring so much pain to them.

i hope i can get to a live here in japan before i leave and support them more u_u

I'm really angry because of those people. How can they be so disrespectful?
I feel so sorry for MUCC and I really hope they don't think about that too much as they know they have many fans all over the world.
But I went to write in their blog on myspace and other people also did. I hope they will read the encouraging words of their fans. I think it'll make them happy >0

omg that just sucks. seriously some ppl just truly suck. I love Mucc.

ppl are just rude. when diru came to houston and performed, ppl were so mean to the two opening bands. like most ppl weren't total assholes to the first band but when the second band came a bunch of idiots were just mean. I felt bad for them.

I just went to a concert this sunday and I only liked two of the like six bands that came and yet I wasn't disrespectful and just standing there watching the bands I didn't like. I still screamed for them and headbanged for them. Even though I didn't know the songs, I still made sure to enjoy them. I think ppl should do that more often. One of the bands even mentioned the fact that ppl still enjoyed them even though they could tell it was their first time hearing them. They thanked the crowd for not throwing beer cans at them like the crowd from the city they performed on Sat.

I mean seriously. All bands should be given respect to. What the GNR fans did was just horrid and immature.

Thanks for the translation so much.

Their're many causes for this problem.

I can touch their feeling now.

But Mucc!! You'd done by your own way.
